License Extensions

License extensions can be granted for the following reasons:

  1. Extended civilian absence in another state or country.
  2. Physical impairment that prohibits in-office application.
  3. Active duty military service out of state.
  • If you are not in Colorado to renew your driver license, you may request an extension of your expiration date as long as your license is not expired at the time of the request and there are no unpaid tickets or other active restraints on your driving privilege.
  • Only one extension can be granted to applicants situated within the United States. Applicants who are located internationally may request a second extension.
  • Colorado residents currently in Colorado who are temporarily unable to apply in person due to physical impairment are eligible for a one-year extension when their driver license expires. You must have a medical note from your doctor requesting your driver license be extended because of a medical situation. This can be submitted when applying to extend your license.
  • A civilian extension is valid for one year from the expiration date and can only be issued once unless the applicant is out of the country. A sticker will be issued to extend the date of the license.
  • If out of country, a second extension may be issued with a separate request made within 90 days of expiration of the first extension.
  • You may check your eligibility and apply to extend your license online.
  • If you do not extend your license online, the department will need:
    • A written, Request for Extension, (DR2342) signed by you with an out-of-state mailing address.
      • Provide your full legal name, date of birth, and out-of-state address on the request form and include payment of the appropriate fee. Make check or money order payable to the Colorado Department of Revenue.

Mail the request to:

Division of Motor Vehicles
