The state DMV requires appointments for most driver license and ID card services. Walk-in availability is extremely limited and not guaranteed. We strongly recommend booking an appointment to ensure you can be served. Some county offices allow walk-ins but is not guaranteed.

A REAL ID is credential that is compliant with the federal REAL ID Act. In Colorado, all first time permits, license and ID cards are REAL ID compliant.  The REAL ID requires applicants to provide evidence of their identity, lawful status, social security number and residential address. The exceptions are credentials issued under the Colorado Road Safety Community Act to undocumented and temporarily legal residents who receive a “Standard” credential that is not federally compliant.

To receive a REAL ID compliant License or ID card, you must bring documents that prove:

  • Your Identity: Your full, legal name must be on the documents. No nicknames or initials unless they are part of your legal name on an official document like a birth certificate.
  • Name Changes: If the name on your documents differ, you must provide proof od any name changes.
    • Such as an original certified marriage certificate for each name change (if you haven't reverted to a maiden name) or a certified court order for a name change.
    • Find more information on the Change Your Name on Your Credential page.
  • Your Colorado Address: Depending on the type of license, you will need one or two proofs that you live in Colorado.
  • Your Legal Presence: This proves that you have a lawful presence in the US. These documents must be original, full-size, and have an offical seal from a state or county. US issused birth certificates must show the person listed on the certificate was born in the US.
  • Your Social Security Number (SSN): You can provide this number verbally. You will not need this if you are applying for a standard license (Undocumented/Temporarily Lawfully Present non-commercial credential).

Get the full list of acceptable documents as well as key requirements for documents on the Getting a Colorado Driver License or ID: Required Documents you Need to Bring page.

A REAL ID requires proof of your Identity, 2 proofs of your Colorado address, proof of lawful presence, and a SSN.

A Standard credential (only available to undocumented and temporarily lawfully present residents) requires proof of identity,  one proof of Colorado residence, and a signed Colorado Road and Community Safety Act affidavit. Standard licenses cannot be used for federal purposes including flying, benefits or entry to federal facilities. Find out more about Standard credentials and what you will need to bring to your appointment on the Standard License Requirements page.

  • Bring your old driver's license from your previous state.
  • It can be expired, but for less than one year.
  • If you lost your old license, you can bring a recent Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) from that state dated within 30 days and showing a valid license, along with another form of ID. An MVR is your driving history report.
  • If your license expired over a year ago, you are starting from scratch and need to be prepared to take the basic written test, purchase the permit, take the driving test, and purchase the driving license.
  • Check out our New to Colorado page for more information.
  • You will also need to provide documents that prove your identity, address, SSN, and lawful presence from the Getting a Colorado Driver License or ID: Required Documents you Need to Bring page.
