State and County DMVs

Which one do I go to for the services I need?

The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles provides driver license, I.D. card and driver services online and at driver license offices located throughout the Centennial State. These services include, but are not limited to, license renewals, driver records, reinstatements and instruction permit testing.

Many new residents are surprised to learn that in Colorado, counties conduct vehicle registration transactions such as registration renewals and tag replacement. County motor vehicle offices work independently under their elected county clerks and recorders. Counties set their hours of operation, as well as local taxes and fees which is why costs for services vary from county to county.

Counties handle most title and registration transactions for personal vehicles, including titling and registration services. Unless you are using DMV online services or an MV Express Kiosk, you must visit your county motor vehicle office for vehicle services. Other counties’ motor vehicle offices will not be able to provide services. Additionally, State driver license offices and the State DMV Vehicle Services office cannot perform these services.

Please see below for a list of transactions each type of office can process. Transactions that can be done online through myDMV or a kiosk will be indicated.
