Identification Cards

Colorado residents may hold a Colorado driver license/permit OR Colorado ID card - not both.

For more information regarding REAL ID and being a Colorado ID holder, please click here: REAL ID and Colorado.

Minors (under 21)

A legal guardian will need to accompany the minor to the driver license office. The guardian will need to have proof of legal guardianship (i.e. child's birth certificate with their name as parent) as well as proof of their identity (i.e. valid Colorado driver license).

To obtain an ID for the first time:

Fees:

Identification cards for residents over 60 years of age are free.

An entire list of fees is available here.

Renew your ID card:

You may renew your adult ID card any time prior to the expiration date - you shouldn't wait until it expires.

  • Check eligibility to renew online. When you renew your driver license or identification card online, your printed receipt and the old/expired credential will serve as your temporary credential. You will not be issued the same temporary credential that is issued to those who visit a driver license office in person.
  • Check eligibility to renew by mail
  • Under 21 years of age:  You must visit an office to renew or replace ID card
  • 21 years of age and older: On or after your 21st birthday, you may renew online or visit a driver license office.

Your new ID card will be mailed to the address you provide. Documents usually arrive in 10-14 business days, but may take up to 30 business days to be delivered. You can check the status of your credential online. If it has been more than 30 days, call 303-205-5600.
