Organ, Eye and Tissue Donation Information

Saying Yes to Donation Saves Lives

Colorado has a statutory partnership with Donor Alliance to educate the public about organ and tissue donation. It has been possible for many years to sign up as an organ, eye and tissue donor at the same time that you are applying for or renewing your driver license or ID card. You can also sign up anytime at DonateLifeColorado.org

Those obtaining a driver license or ID card can also support the cause by donating to the Emily Keyes John W. Buckner Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Fund. These funds are used solely to educate the public about what organ and tissue donation is and how it works, so that they can make an informed decision.

What it Means to Sign Up as an Organ, Eye and Tissue donor

Signing up as an organ, eye and tissue donor means you have made the decision to donate your organs, eyes and tissues at the time of your death. Your decision to be a donor takes priority over your family’s preferences so it’s important to discuss donation with your loved ones.

The Need and Impact

In Colorado, nearly 2,000 people are on the waiting list for a lifesaving organ transplant. More than 100,000 are waiting nationwide. Thousands more patients could benefit from lifesaving and healing eye and tissue donations. One donor can save up to eight lives through organ donation and save and heal more than 75 lives through eye and tissue donation.

Anyone Can Sign Up, Regardless of Age or Medical Condition

More than 68 percent of Coloradans have signed up to be organ, eye and tissue donors and save lives through organ and tissue donation and transplantation. Anyone can register to be an organ, eye and tissue donor, regardless of age, race, medical history, religion or income.
