If your license was suspended for a non-alcohol-related reason, the process is usually a matter of clearing the underlying issue and paying your fees at a driver license office. Find your specific suspension type below for details on what you need and what you must do.
To reinstate your license after suspension for unpaid tickets, you must:
- Pay the ticket with the court that issued it.
- Get a court clearance receipt or notice.
- Pay the $95 reinstatement fee.
- Wait until your suspension period is officially over.
- Obtain an SR-22 Insurance certificate from your auto insurance company.
- Submit the SR-22 certificate along with paying the $95 Reinstatement Fee.
- You will be required to take the written test.
- Resolve the issue with the child support agency. The agency must send an electronic compliance notice directly to the DMV.
- Pay the $95 Reinstatement Fee.
If you receive a ticket for a moving violation in a state other than Colorado and fail to pay the fine, the Non-Resident Violator Compact (NRVC)—to which Colorado and most other U.S. states belong—allows the issuing state to notify Colorado. Colorado will then suspend your driver's license until the ticket is paid.
To clear an NRVC suspension on your Colorado license:
- Pay the Fine: Pay the ticket fine directly to the court in the state where you received the violation.
- Obtain Compliance Statement: Get a Non-Resident Violator Compact (NRVC) compliance statement from the court that issued the NRVC.
- Submit Documents Online: Upload the NRVC compliance statement online with myDMV. Go to Driver/ID Services, then use the “View/upload reinstatement documents” link.
- Pay Reinstatement Fee: Pay the required reinstatement fee using the “Pay a reinstatement fee” link on the same page.
