Paying a Ticket or Penalty Assessment in Colorado

We CAN accept: State Penalty Assessments (tickets written under Colorado State Statutes).

We CANNOT accept: 

• Summons or Municipal Citations: These must be paid directly to the local court listed on your ticket.
• Parking Tickets or Photo Radar Tickets: You must deal directly with the city or agency that issued these.
• Old Tickets (Over 40 days old): If your ticket is more than 40 days old, it has already been referred to the court. You can no longer pay it through the DMV.

• The 20-Day Rule for Point Reductions: If you pay online or your mailed payment is postmarked within 20 days of receiving the ticket, you will receive a reduction in the points added to your driving record.
  • Note: The financial charge shown on the citation stays the same.
• Admission of Guilt: Paying your ticket is considered an admission of guilt. If you want to fight the ticket, do not pay it. Instead, you must go to court on the appearance date listed on your citation.

• Pay Online: You can pay your eligible penalty assessments online at mydmv.colorado.gov here.
• Pay by Mail: Send a check or money order made payable to the Department of Revenue. You must include a clear, legible copy of your ticket with your payment. Please do not mail cash.
• Pay In Person: You can pay in person, which is the only time cash is accepted.

Note: Phone payments are not accepted.

If a ticket is issued to a minor (someone under 18), special rules apply:

• Your payment must be accompanied by the Penalty Assessment Notice Minor Affidavit (Form DR 2334), which the officer should have provided to you.
• A parent or guardian must sign this form.
• The parent's signature must be witnessed and stamped by a Notary Public.

If you receive a ticket for a moving violation in a state other than Colorado and fail to pay the fine, the Non-Resident Violator Compact (NRVC)—to which Colorado and most other U.S. states belong—allows the issuing state to notify Colorado. Colorado will then suspend your driver license until the ticket is paid.

To clear an NRVC suspension on your Colorado license, you must:

• Pay the Fine: Pay the ticket fine directly to the court in the state where you received the violation.
• Obtain a Compliance Statement: Get a Non-Resident Violator Compact (NRVC) compliance statement from the court that issued the NRVC.
• Submit Documents Online: Upload the NRVC compliance statement online at mydmv.colorado.gov. Scroll down to the box titled "Payments and Reinstatements," then select the option that says "View/upload reinstatement documents".
• Pay Reinstatement Fee: Pay the required reinstatement fee using the “Pay a reinstatement fee” link on the same page.
