Are there fees associated with myDMV?

Yes, there are service fees associated with using myDMV that are assessed by the third-party service provider, Colorado Interactive. Colorado Interactive is responsible for timely payment processing and security, which requires them to charge a fee to maintain their operation. The service fee for credit cards is typically $0.75 plus 2.25% of the order total or $1 for electronic check payments.

I was trying to complete a transction online, but after I paid the transaction it said it didn't go through, but I'm seeing money taken out of my bank account; Why?

It sounds like the attempt to transact was not successfully completed. What you see on your bank statement or credit card is a pending transaction and it will drop off in a few days depending on the policies of your banking or lender institution.

Driver Transactions

Renewing Your License or ID

Renewing Your License or ID

  • Most common reasons you cannot renew online:  License has expired for over one year, or if the picture is 10 years or older; or vision restrictions have changed.
  • Under 21: Individuals younger than 21 cannot renew their driver's license or ID card online.
  • Temporarily Lawfully Present (TLP) are not eligible to renew online.
  • Undocumented customers (NLP): You will need the proof document you most recently presented at a Driver License Office for issuance of a license/ID/permit in order to complete online verification.
  • Vision Requirements:
    • If there is any change in your vision restrictions, you will not be able to renew or upgrade online.  Please make an appointment to be seen in an office.
    • Age 80 and Older: You must upload a signed Optometrist/Ophthalmologist Statement (DR 2498). This form attests that you have had an eye examination within the preceding six months and provides the results.
    • Age 21 to 79: You will be asked to certify that you have had an eye exam within the last year. You will not be asked to upload a document.
    • If your vision requirements related to corrective lenses or any other restriction on your current license have changed from your last issuance, you will not be able to renew online.
  • Email: A valid email is required to receive the status of your online request.
  • Payment and Transaction Receipt: Payment options available include Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. Your printed receipt and your old/expired license or ID will serve as your temporary credential.
  • Online Application Review: Your application review is reviewed by DMV staff for approval before the renewal is complete. If issues are identified during review, you will be notified via email and provided additional instructions, which may include the need to schedule an in-office appointment. At the appointment, the driver license technician will perform a vision exam- no other form is necessary.
  • Delivery Time: Documents typically arrive in 10-14 business days, but can take up to 30 business days. Check Status: If you have not received your new license after 30 days, check its status using the online service.
  • Changing status from Nonlawfully Present to Permanently Lawfully Present online is not an option currently.
Upgrading my Permit to a License
  • If you are 18 and are required to upload your drive log to receive your license, you must upload the signature page with your total driving hours, and it must be signed by a responsible adult (the first page of the Road Ready app’s generated log, or the last page of the Supervised Driving manual logs).
  • If you did not pass your first road drive test, you will have to pay a $15 retest fee for each additional test until you pass, and you will not be able to upgrade online. This fee is in addition to the fee that you paid to the third-party tester. You have to go to a Driver’s License Office to pay this fee.
  • For a Map and List of Driver Education Schools that offer drive tests, click here.
Downgrading my License to an ID
  • Those with health or personal reasons who decide to give up their driving privilege for a Colorado non-driving ID card may do so online.
  • After downgrading, if you go more than one year without an active, valid Driver’s License and decide you want your license back, you will have to retake the knowledge test, purchase a permit, take the physical driving test at a driving school, and then purchase a license.
Where's my driver license/ID?
  • Click here to see where the physical copy of your new credential is in the process.
  • If the online service does not have information about your credential or says it was delivered and you do not have it, you can call (303) 205-5600.
  • If you do not receive your credential after 30 days, you can get a free replacement in an office. For this replacement, you do not need an appointment.
Looking for a Vehicle Record?
  • You can request your driving record or a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) online that details your driving history, including license status, traffic violations, accidents, and more.
  • Records purchased online are uncertified (without the embossed seal) and will be emailed to you.
  • You can also purchase driving records from any driver’s license office. These records can be uncertified or certified. Certified records will only be sent by U.S. mail.
View/Upload Reinstatement Documents
  • It can take up to 3 to 4 business days to process the documents to be entered into the system, if accepted.
  • If your documents are not accepted, you will receive correspondence by mail to your last known address that outlines next steps and provides additional information.
  • More information can be found here.
Pay and submit citations
  • This service allows you to submit and pay eligible citations that you have received within the last 40 days, which have not been sent to the court.
  • The DMV may not have received your citation, but you can still pay online and skip the trip. You will need your citation information and upload a copy/picture of the citation.
  • Citations that are designated as a Summons or a Municipal citation must be paid through the appropriate court and cannot be accepted through the Department of Revenue.
  • Please review the entire citation for proper submission.
  • All minor citations need to include a notarized Minor Affidavit form (DR 2334) or include a notarization on the citation.
  • Citations that are issued by the City of Denver, Photo enforcement, and toll road charges are not payable through the Department of Revenue.
  • Make sure the citation is complete and legible, which includes the front and back.
  • More information about Tickets and Penalty Assessments is available here.
Request a Hearing
  • This service allows you to request a hearing if you have received one of the following documents from a law enforcement officer: Express Consent Affidavit and Notice of Revocation (EC), Affidavit of Insurance and Notice of Suspension (AIN), or Hit and Run and Order of Suspension (SHAR).
  • A copy of the above-mentioned documents will need to be uploaded at the time of the request to ensure your request is handled promptly.
  • If you are requesting a hearing for an Affidavit of Insurance and Notice of Suspension (AIN), you will need a copy of your proof of insurance or proof of SR22 insurance to complete your request.
  • If you received an Insurance Affidavit and Notice of Suspension and had valid insurance at the time of the stop, a hearing may not be necessary.  Please submit your affidavit and proof of insurance using the View/Upload Reinstatement Documents e-service within the Driver/ID Services tab at mydmv.colorado.gov.
  • The last date of issuance of your driver’s license will be required at the time of your request.  If you are unable to locate this information, please contact our customer call center at 303-205-5613 before requesting your hearing.
  • A valid driver’s license is required prior to being eligible for a temporary permit. If your license is currently expired, you will need to visit a Drivers License office to complete the hearing request process. Please remember to bring the documents that you were issued by the law enforcement officer.
  • If the hearing you are trying to request is not regarding Express Consent, Insurance or Hit & Run, please email the Hearings Division at dor_info_hearings@state.co.us to request a general hearing. Please include in your email: Full legal name, Date of birth, Colorado DL or ID Number, Action number or letter number, current mailing address, and current phone number.
I moved and need to complete a transaction online, how do I change my address?

In the Vehicle Services tab of myDMV, select the “Add/change a vehicle address” transaction. Once this transaction has been completed, you can go to the other vehicle transaction.

Vehicle Transactions

Do I have other options besides myDMV if I don’t want to wait for USPS?

Some transactions can also be completed at a kiosk. Please visit Colorado MVExpress for a list of transactions, participating counties, and kiosk locations; if your county participates in the kiosk program, you can use any kiosk location. Kiosk transactions are generally completed in approximately 2 minutes, and the documents are printed at the kiosk. You can also contact your county motor vehicle office.

Why didn’t I get a copy of my registration receipt immediately once I submitted the transaction online?

Registration receipts (to include a detailed receipt) will be mailed along with the tabs and/or license plates.  If you cannot wait and need a detailed receipt, or lost your receipt, you can select “Get a transaction receipt” in the Vehicle Services tab of myDMV; it will then email you a detailed transaction receipt (you will need a license plate number and VIN number or verification code).

I need a copy of a detailed transaction receipt: how do I get that online?

In the Vehicle Services tab on myDMV, under “Records,” is the “Get a transaction receipt” option. You will need the vehicle’s license plate and the VIN or the verification code (from the registration). The receipt will be emailed to you.

Requesting a Vehicle Record/Title History Search
  • You must first create a VRS Account Number before requesting a search. Click here to create a VRS Account or verify your number if you forgot.
  • Once you have the VRS Account Number, request the record/title history search under “Records” in the Vehicle Services tab.
  • The results will be emailed to you; you will only be able to open the results once. You must disable pop-up blockers and open the results from a computer and NOT a phone or tablet. If you fail to do so, you must submit another request and wait for the processing time.
    • This is for fraud prevention since personally identifiable information (PII) will be included in the email.
  • National searches cannot be done online. You must use the DR 2489A, found on the DMV forms webpage.

Permissible uses

  • If you state, “This is my record,” you must be the vehicle owner in the Colorado system.
    • If you require the search as you are “bonding for the title,” do not choose “this is my record” as it is not yours.
  • Out-of-state tow carriers need to supply the completed tow ticket; this can only be done by a mailed or in-person DR 2489A; it cannot be completed online.
  • Repair shops need to supply the repair order, listing the total
  • Storage facilities need the rental agreement or a certified VIN form.
  • If you are claiming it is in connection with a court proceeding, a court order, or documentation from an attorney with a case number is required

Search types

  • Vehicle Record Search: is the current owner’s information.
  • Vehicle Title History Search: This is a record of all the vehicle owners since it was first purchased. This request will provide the documents used to create the vehicle account and anything that has been scanned during the time of ownership, such as expired registration cards and ownership documents.

NOTE: You must meet a permissible use requirement (or be the owner of record) to get this information.

Requesting a “No Colorado Title Available Letter”
  • Create a VRS Account Number before you can request a search. Click here to create a VRS Account or verify your number if you forgot. Once you have the VRS Account Number, you can request the title history search.
  • Request a title history under “Records” in the Vehicle Services tab.
  • In the “Disclose what data/information is to be included in the search,” include that the letter is needed to prove that no Colorado title was issued, so that the vehicle can be registered in the state requesting the letter.
Submitting a First-Time Vehicle Registration
  • Once you have received your “title complete notice” in the mail, or confirmed via the “check title status” that your title has been complete, you can then register your new vehicle.
  • This option is only available to individuals who purchased a vehicle from a Colorado dealership where paperwork had to be submitted to the county. If you purchased your vehicle from a third party, are bringing it in from another state, or received the title when you purchased your vehicle, you will need to visit your county motor vehicle office.
  • License plates take around 3 weeks to arrive via mail once ordered online through myDMV. If you cannot wait this long, visit your county motor vehicle office; they will have regular green & white plates available and be able to issue additional plates or temporary tags if necessary.
  • You cannot transfer license plates or receive registration credit from another vehicle’s current registration online; you will need to visit your county motor vehicle office.
  • Driving on expired temporary tags may subject you to Law Enforcement action. Counties can issue additional temporary tags at their discretion.
  • myDMV checks for proof of insurance in the Colorado Motorist Insurance Identification Database (MIIDB) and if it is not found, then the transaction cannot be completed online.  It is your insurance agency who reports your insurance information to MIIDB; sometimes the information is not reported and sometimes is not reported correctly. If you get an error for insurance you will need to check with your insurance agent to get it into MIIDB or provide proof directly to your county motor vehicle office.
Renewing a Vehicle Registration
  • If your address has changed; please change your address first in “Add/change a vehicle address”. If the system does not allow the legal address update, you may still update your mailing address to receive your tabs at the correct location. Please contact your county motor vehicle office as soon as possible to update your legal address.
  • Gas emissions test results can take up to 48 hours to be loaded into the system.
  • Diesel emissions test results can take up to a week to be loaded into the system.
  • You will not be able to renew a registration that is over 13 months expired online; you will need to contact your county motor vehicle office.
  • If you have an E-470 hold, you will not be able to renew online until the hold is removed. Please contact 303-537-3470 for questions regarding an E-470 Express Toll hold.
  • Please make sure you are typing in the correct characters or the plate, VIN, or verification code; Os and zeros can look similar, as can Bs and 8s, and I's and 1's.
  • myDMV checks for proof of insurance in the Colorado Motorist Insurance Identification Database (MIIDB), and if it is not found, then the transaction cannot be completed online.  It is your insurance agency that reports your insurance information to MIIDB; sometimes the information is not reported, and sometimes it is not reported correctly. If you get an error for insurance you will need to check with your insurance agent to get it into MIIDB or provide proof directly to your county motor vehicle office.
Requesting a Duplicate Title
  • There cannot be an active lien in the system to request a duplicate title (unless it is the lienholder requesting the duplicate)
  • You cannot have an out-of-state address to complete the process online; if you do, you must mail in the form DR2539A.
  • If you are under strict time constraints for the duplicate, please contact your county motor vehicle office directly to get a duplicate or make an appointment at the state office to make an “Other non-county title and registration” appointment.
Can I transfer my license plate or receive registration credit from my previous vehicle to a new vehicle I just purchased through myDMV?

Unfortunately, you cannot. You would need to complete these transactions directly with your county motor vehicle office.

I am waiting for my title complete notice on my new vehicle, is there any way to check the status online?

Yes, in the Vehicle Services tab of myDMV you can select “Check a title status”.  If the title is completed, you can register your vehicle with the county if you have not yet received the title complete notice yet.

I have moved out of state, why can I not request a duplicate title online?

You cannot complete this request online if you have an out-of-state address.  You would need to complete the request via mail, with the DR 2539A Duplicate Title/Lien Request and Receipt form, found on the Forms page.

A pop up in myDMV says I need an EV sticker before I can renew. How do I do this and why do I need to?

This can be accomplished in the Vehicle Services tab by selecting “Replace Electric Vehicle Decal”. Once this has been completed you should be able to continue with the renewal transaction.  Since updating our current operating system in August 2018, some records may not indicate that the vehicle has an EV decal if it was issued prior to that date.  All plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles now must have either the EV plate or a decal.
