DENVER, Wednesday, June 28, 2023 — The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is pleased to announce a significant improvement for undocumented Coloradans seeking an appointment.
Starting July 1, undocumented Coloradans seeking a driver license or identification card appointment will be able to choose any driver license office and appointment type.
Previously, the DMV had separate appointment types for Coloradans who could provide proof of legal presence in Colorado and those who could not. However, the DMV and Gov. Jared Polis announced a few changes to DMV services on June 2 during an event to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the Colorado Road and Community Safety Act of 2013.
These changes included offering licensing services to undocumented Coloradans at all of the state's 36 driver license offices and a move to streamline the program’s nomenclature and better align terminology with other states. The DMV has started calling credentials issued under the CO-RCSA program as “standard” driver licenses and ID cards since they are not REAL ID compliant.
Implemented on Aug. 1, 2014, the Colorado Road and Community Safety Act (SB 13-251) enables undocumented or temporarily legal residents in the United States to obtain driver licenses, instruction permits, or identification cards after completing the necessary testing. This initiative reflects the DMV's unwavering dedication to public safety.
Currently, the appointment scheduling website has (SB-251) next to driver license offices (DLOs) that offer standard licenses and ID cards; however, (SB-251) will be going away on July 1 since all state DLOs will offer this service.
