Vehicle Record Searches
Colorado State law and the Federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act (DPPA) do not allow the Department to disclose or otherwise make available to any person or entity personal information about any individual obtained by the department in connection with a motor vehicle. For a person to purchase a record other than their own, they must meet a permissible use for that record, or they must have a signed and notarized statement or Power of Attorney (POA) from the owner of record authorizing them to request the record information. - Permissible Uses
 - It is your record (you must be the owner of the vehicle in the Colorado system)
 - Out-of-state tow carriers need to supply the completed tow ticket; this can only be done via mail or in person (see below)
 - Repair shops need to supply the repair order, listing the total
 - Storage facilities need the rental agreement or a certified VIN form.
 - If you are claiming it is in connection with a court proceeding, a court order, or documentation from an attorney, a case number is required.
 - “Bonding for title”
- Do not choose “this is my record” as it is not.
 - Make sure to choose “record search”, not “title history.”
