Identity Theft of Non Colorado Residents

If you are not a Colorado resident but have received information that your driving privilege in Colorado is suspended, revoked or canceled then you could be a victim of Identity Theft or Mistaken Identity. The following steps will assist in determining what action you must take.

Identity Theft of Out of State Resident

If your State's DMV office has indicated that someone else in Colorado is using your Name, Social Security Number and Date of Birth then this is likely a case of Identity Theft and you will need to do the following:

• File a police report with your local law enforcement agency

• You will also need to mail the following documents to the Motor Vehicle Investigations Unit (MVIU) to help clear your name from the identity theft:

  • 10 print fingerprint card of your fingerprints that were taken by an official law enforcement agency.

  • Documents that establish your full legal name, date of birth, identity and lawful presence (if applicable).

  • Provide any evidence, police reports or information you have regarding the identity theft.

  • Once these items are received by the MVIU, you will be contacted within 24-48 hours of receipt.

Mistaken Identity of Out of State Resident

If your state DMV office has indicated your name and date of birth (ONLY) are the same as someone in Colorado who has restraints on their driving record, then this is likely a case of Mistaken Identity and can be resolved with a No Record Clearance Letter. Identity Theft Out of State of Colorado Resident

If you are a resident of Colorado but have been told that your driving privilege is under restraint in another state, that state must clear your name from the National Driver Register (NDR) as a victim of identity theft, or provide a clearance letter verifying you are a separate person from the one on the NDR.
